Allison Road

Those days are long gone.
The alfalfa fields are condos. The palo verde were pulled up to make movie theaters.
It wasn’t that long ago that driving out here could be a catharsis. The open road would stretch into the deep heart of the Sonoran Desert. This was the last stop of civilization. Last exit for gas.
The Gin Blossoms were playing on the radio and I could drive out to this song’s namesake, just to clear my head. It seemed to be on the edge of the frontier. I could escape the pressures of reality and just stare into the desert.
And now, I drive there everyday, but for entirely the opposite reason. My work is just a few blocks away. Allison Road is an industrial park now. And I can see it from the parking lot when I drive up to work.
Oh well, I guess its part of growing up to see your past fade away.
But some days I like to pretend it’s still the same.

alfalfa fields sound lovely. how sad. oh well. i hope it's not taken over by trump buildings as most things are here.
Why do they call it 'progress?' Seems to be the opposite to me. I liked it better the way it was!
